Meniscus Tears

The meniscus is a C-shaped cartilage within the knee that acts as a cushion to absorb shock. Each knee has two menisci which are located between the tibia (lower leg bone) and the femur (thigh bone). A torn meniscus is a tear in this cartilage of the knee.

Meniscus Specialist Singapore

Meniscus tears can occur due to:

Trauma & twisting knee injuries

Degeneration (mainly in the older population)

Contact sports which involves frequent change of direction such as basketball, soccer, rugby

Awkward landing, jumping

Previous anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury

Pain

Swelling at the joint line area

Tenderness along the joint line

Limited range of movement

Locking (inability to straighten the knee)

Clicking or “popping” sounds during movement

Initial acute management includes rest, ice, compression and elevation. Subsequent conservative management such as physiotherapy will aim to reduce pain, improve range of motion/flexibility, strength and balance/control.

Healing potential of the meniscus depends on factors such as the size, shape, location of tears as well as age. Significant tears will require surgery. Surgery is usually done through small keyhole incisions and involves meniscus repair or removal of the torn unstable meniscus sections that have poor healing potential.

You should consult a knee meniscus specialist Singapore as soon as possible. They will have a discussion about your medical history, and carry out a range of tests including movement assessments.

MRI is usually needed for further assessment.

Early assessment and management of the condition will give you the best chance of a quick recovery. Fix an appointment with our meniscus specialist in Singapore, Dr Dennis Ng to resolve your meniscus tear now.
